Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center
The Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center is located in San Bernardino on nine acres of land. On those nine acres are three rehab units under the management of Captain Valerie Tanguay. This rehabilitation center is the primary facility for housing and treating both male and female inmates incarcerated by the county. In 1960, the male unit was first opened. It housed only 100 inmates and was what you might call a labor camp. Today the male unit can hold more than 1000 inmates which is a far cry from its humble beginnings. There are actually current plans to expand the property to accommodate 500 more inmates.
The female unit opened in the year 1988 and was a very limited area for female inmates requiring rehabilitation and incarceration. There were three dorms at that time, but today there is an additional unit which is maximum security. The unit houses not only incarcerated females but also females awaiting their trial. While the average female population is 240 the facility can hold as many as 326 female inmates. Whether male or female, this rehabilitation center has a program that can benefit inmates and their families.
Glen Helen is working together with the judicial council and the court system to improve the inmate Work Release Program. This program allows inmates who qualify to take classes inside Glen Helen that prepare them for this program. Upon successful completion of these classes the qualifying inmates may be permitted to participate in the Work Release Program. This gives the inmates the opportunity to serve the community as a functioning individual, earn their own money, achieve a sense of accomplishment and purpose and even visit with family members during work breaks such as lunch hours.
The Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center offers extensive classes and programs for inmates who need such services. There are anger management programs, mental health programs and extensive drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs. Inmates who are physically and/or mentally dependent or addicted to illegal drugs, prescription drugs, over the counter drugs and/or alcohol can get the help they desperately need. In addition the facility offers vocational training such as auto body, landscaping, print shop and more to help inmates find gainful employment upon release. As you can see Glen Helen offers a wide range of services and programs for incarcerated individuals.
